  1. Spectacular Features in an Office-Focused Headset

    After using The Jabra Evolve 80 for a few weeks, I understand that your fit with these headsets will be based on making sure you buy them for what your needs are!

    Functionality

    The headsets themselves are very feature rich and are clearly targeted at the busy professional, particularly in a call center or cubicle farm type environment. To this end, there are actually some unique features that drive whether to buy this model versus anything else in a very crowded headset market:

    First, the active noise cancellation. Lets be honest, Bose sets the standard here, and while Sony, Jabra, Audio Technica and others have technology to provide the ability to actively suppress the way your ear interprets environment noise, Bose' offering is currently setting the market standard. These headsets don't change that picture but can be very effective at suppressing tonal noise. Understanding that active noise cancellation is only well matched against droning type noises (fans, low level background noise, air conditioning vents, plane engines), you have to think about your environment to know whether that will help you. These headsets will be effective at helping to drone out the 20 people in the spacious office around you. They will be less effective at ANC cancelling out the loud mouth in the office right next door. There is a slight hiss to the ANC on these devices, and a feeling of pressure on the ears. Your ability to accept that will depend on your personal tolerance as after hours of using the ANC, the pressure can become cognitively noticeable.

    The passive isolation via the foam cups is slight. There is a solid fit, and without excessive pressure on the head, even for my very round noggin using it 10 to 12 hours a day. The materials within the ear cup however are simply not dense enough and/or continuous enough between the ear cup housing and the head to be particularly efficient in dampening environmental acoustics.

    The standout features, while small, for me were the busy light on this headset and the hardware call interface module for my PC. Having a hardware button to mute and unmute means I dont have to constantly be on the Skype window, and a visual cue (in the form of a red light ring on each ear) for people to see whether I am engaged in a call or a meeting or not has been great at reducing call interruptions.

    Audio Quality

    I have to say this is the one real disappointment that pulls this back from being a five star product. For something in the $200-300 price class, I do not neccessarily expect it to perform at the same level as a "pure" $300 Sennheiser or Klipsch audiphile closed headphone. I do, however, expect that there should be full spectrum audio, with reasonable re-production. These headphones have a high level of audio clarity however are fully 100% geared for humans to be heard talking, and for the talking that you do to be conveyed to the other party. As a result, bass is actively subdued in the tuning to help highlight the tones of the voices in your calls. Effective for calls, it will be very noticeable in listening to music through these through decreased "depth" and "impact" to your music.

    The other challenge with this product is that the hardware only enables input to the PC at 1 channel, 16 bit, 16000 Hertz. What this means is that the capture of the audio quality from your microphone is only going to be "good enough" for calls. If you want to do voice recording for presentations where the depth of your voice is captured in the playback, or produce HD video for work, something like that, you will likely need to buy a microphone rather than using this headset as it is only "just enough" from a quality standpoint for phone calls.

    Overall

    Overall, if what you want is an office environment headset with some basic features to help reduce the distraction of the environment around you, these are an excellent choice, if perhaps a bit steep in price for the lack of audio quality. Construction is excellent, functional integration with Skype has been flawless, however a few small adjustments up-market in the speakers and analog-to-digital conversion in the USB device included would have really helped the value of this set.
